VAT and sales tax are different

39 countries, including Korea, Japan and the EU, use VAT, and shown prices usually include it. The United States and Canada use sales tax instead: shown prices leave it out and it is added at the till.

Reduced rates

Many countries charge a lower rate on essentials such as food, books and medicine. Japan charges 8% on food and newspapers, Germany 7% on food and books, and the UK 0% on children's clothing and most food. What counts as what differs by country, so pick the matching item from the rate list.

US sales tax

The US has no federal VAT and each state sets its own rate. Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware have no state sales tax, and cities and counties add their own on top. This calculator uses the state rate and shows the average local rate alongside.
